Costing Estimates
Driver/Guide: US $10 – US $25 per day per guide
Chef: US $10 – US $25 per day per chef (for adventure camping safari)
Generally, you should budget about 15% of your total climb cost for tips. If you are you are in a small group, you should contribute more per person to the tip kitty. Your chief guide will provide you a list of crew and the jobs performed on the day you begin your climb. Please use this list to allocate tips. Tips are generally distributed at the last camp or hut on Kilimanjaro and Meru. We recommend giving each staff person their tip. If you are part of a large group, you may also call a few people at a time to distribute tips. You can consult with your head guide on the best way to distribute tips.
Head Guide: US $20 – US $30 per day per guide
Assistant Guide: US $15 – US $25 per day per guide
Cook: US $10 – US $15 per day per cook
Porter: US $5 – US $10 per day per porter
A bit more should be provided for the porters who perform extra duties such as toilet cleaner, camp crew, and waitress. Please be aware there can be 20-30 total porters/guides on your trip.
For example, if you have 6 people on a trip of 6 days, you should tip the head guide $30 x 6 days = $180 /7 people = approx $26 per person.
